Musical background, collaborations and style
Ubidube Whitaker was born and raised in the historic Haight Ashbury district of San Francsico and surrounded by art and culture. It is not suprising he found his way into San Francisco’s music scene via his electric bass playing. Self-taught, his dedication and focus come through with his uniquely soulful and funky style. Considered one of San Francisco’s most talented bass players, his humble and
professional disposition make him an asset to any musical setting.
Ranging from blues, funk, hip hop and hard rock, Ubi is well versed and diverse in his background. His experience spans over 30 years.
Though best known for his work with Storm and Her Dirty Mouth, a progressive hard rock/punk band, he has also contributed in bands such as Last to Serve, a culturally diverse rap band and Little White Radio, a rock/hip hop band with a political edge. He also performed with Mutual Benefit Life, a free-style jazz collaboration. Demonstrating his diversity he is well known for his work in local blues bands such as; TC and The Blue Reptiles, The Horn Dogs, The Funk Daddies, as well as Edna Love and the Fat Tuesday Band. More recently, Ubi has contributed bass to Big Fun, a cover band playing hits from the 80’s and 90’s.
Ubi can also be found hosting his own blues jam, attracting a variety of San Francisco’s most talented and eclectic musicians.
Adding to his repertoire, he has played with musicians such as Jimi Jamison, Greg Kihn, Eddie Money, George Clinton, Ronkat Spearman, Ry Kihn and Mike Reno. Locally he has collorated with Michael Cavaseno, David Boyce, Eric McFadden, Kevin Carnes, Jeremy Hoenig, Ed Ivey and Paul Dunn.
Ubi not only can master the works of others, but also writes music. Contributing to
Storm and Her Dirty Mouth with local hits such as “crazy love” and “Geraldine”, as well as writing the majority of music for Last to Serve and the band Mutual Benefit Life.
A dynamic musician, who with each breath inhales creativity and exhales talent. He is an inspiration to other artists and best appreciated live to soak in his soulful way.
